Small, frequent meals and foods you can tolerate are often easier, and we will suggest options that suit you. If you cannot keep fluids down, are losing weight or have signs of dehydration, contact your doctor, midwife or hospital promptly.
Carbohydrates usually are not cut out. They are spread across meals and snacks in suitable amounts. We help you plan meals, including rice and other staples, around the blood glucose targets and any medication set by your diabetes or antenatal team.
Australian advice includes avoiding foods with a higher listeria risk (such as soft cheeses unless cooked, cold deli meats and chicken, pâté, pre-prepared salads, ready-to-eat sushi from shops, raw or smoked seafood and unpasteurised dairy), avoiding alcohol and raw egg, limiting fish that can be high in mercury, and keeping caffeine moderate. We will go through what this means for the foods you usually eat, and your midwife or doctor can advise on your situation.
A well-planned vegetarian diet can meet your needs, but nutrients such as iron, vitamin B12, iodine, zinc and protein need attention. We review your intake and suggest practical ways to cover them.
These situations can change your needs and the advice from your antenatal team. We tailor your plan to your circumstances and their recommendations.
